![]() Maredumilli (70 kms from Rajahmundry) in East Godavari district is a part of the Eastern Ghats landscape. The thick canopy of Maredumilli prevents sunrays from entering the ground making the place a suitable playground for butterflies and other insects. The semi evergreen forests with undulating terrain of Maredumilli are bestowed with rich biodiversity. The area enjoys several streams and rivulets, rich in medicinal plants and other rare flora and fauna species. Maredumilli thus provides an excellent opportunity to explore for biodiversity of Eastern Ghats. A variety of animals, plants and butterfly species can be seen throughout the year. Surveys were performed by visual, daytime counts, starting as early as 0900 hrs and ending as late as 1700 hours, depending on weather conditions. Irregular transects were walked, covering as much different habitat at each site as possible. The survey was conducted for a limited portion of Maredumilli, and does not represent a count of the entire area. Butterfly species were identified by sight, or were photographed and identified. Notes on habitat type were taken at each site. Areas covered during the meet:
A total 119 species of butterflies were sited of which 102 species were confirmed. The three days were a mix of sunny and rainy conditions and provided an excellent opportunity to be with the butterflies as well as enjoy the waters of Godavari River. The checklist for the areas covered during this trip can be found here. |
